I entered the practice of law as a second career after many years as a social worker in the criminal justice system. In that career, dealing with courts on a daily basis, I learned about the underlying systems that factor into the outcome of case – both civil and criminal. I chose social work because I wanted to help and because I love working with people and getting to know them. I learned many valuable lessons, but two of them caused me to change careers: first, I learned not to classify individuals based on societal or institutional labels; second, that the power to obtain justice for an individual is in the hands of lawyers. I provided more tangible help to individuals in my first years of practicing law, than I had in my entire career as a social worker.
My practice areas include personal injury, but not just car accidents. I help those who are injured as a result of corporations that put profit before safety (please take a moment to read the short article about prescription errors); I defend those who are accused of crimes without making judgment about the character of the accused in order to obtain the best result for that individual and for our society as a whole. That result occurs when our police, our prosecutors, and our courts are held accountable to enforcing the constitutional protections that are relied upon each and every day by every citizen. I also practice in the area of illegal discrimination in the workplace, unconscionable arbitration agreements, consumer protection, and public accommodation. I also take a limited number of family law cases.
I consider myself to be a trial lawyer in general practice which allows me to recognize legal issues that are often missed by those who are extremely specialized. For instance, I have found wage and hour employment violations while analyzing the wage loss for a simple auto accident claim. In injury cases, Family Medical Leave Act violations may be overlooked by many attorneys because of unfamiliarity with that area of the law. My clients have consistently found that my broad practice background has been beneficial to their cases. Overlooking claims is an expensive mistake that is all too often made. I represent people on contingency, hourly, and flat fee arrangements depending on the particular need. There is no doubt that legal representation is expensive and most of the time, we do not have insurance to pay for that representation. My personal pledge to my clients is that I will never charge for unnecessary work. If I am working on an hourly billing basis, I keep my work efficient and cost effective for my clients. I believe that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I would much rather advise you on avoiding problems than defend you in a lawsuit. I will always provide a brief consultation without charge. I believe that clients should have the opportunity to become acquainted with a lawyer before he or she makes the decision to hire that person. I do not provide advice in a consultation. As lawyers, we are all aware of the public’s perception of our profession. It is my goal to help change that opinion. I hope that you will consider my firm for the needs of your business or family when you need representation or advice.
